Mission of the trust
The main aim of the The Susy Utzinger Animal Protection Trust is the improvement of the quality of animal shelters and animal protection projects in Switzerland as well as abroad. In order to ensure a just and appropriate treatment of animals, the trust both inspects and optimizes (on assignment) animal shelters with respect to quality and standard. The foundation is also in a position to offer financial support to the animal shelters should they require, for example, improvements of the constructional or hygienic kind. Further, the foundation is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals and acts of negligence. It supports and assists animal protection groups on a national and international basis.
Project evaluation The SUST becomes active when there is need for action in animal shelters or animal protection projects. This includes first aid actions (such as food supplies), vermin abatement, veterinary supplies, or castration.
After a thorough analysis of the situation in a given animal shelter, solutions are proposed and implemented in collaboration with the animal protectors. This is always done in careful consideration of the local social, cultural, and legal conditions.
The process of optimizing an animal shelter or animal protection project takes place on many different levels and over a long period of time:
1. Animal care: providing medical assistance, food and care.
2. Quality of animal care: SUST supports the training and advanced training of experts to optimize operational procedures, facilities and administration.
3. Another very important point concerns the assistance of supported animal shelters on their road to independency. The placement of homeless animals, the optimization of web presence and handling of administrative issues, the organization of information meetings as well as regular fund raising all contribute in helping a struggling animal protection project become a success – for all people involved and above all for the animals concerned.
Cruelty to animals The foundation also aims at preventing cruelty to animals and negligence of animals. It furthermore supports and assists animal protection on a national and international basis. Collaborations The foundation works in close contact with other animal protection organizations and associations, and collaborates with veterinarians and other specialists in the field.
The principles and values of the The Susy Utzinger Animal Protection Trust The foundation encourages the understanding and the positive tenor of humans towards animals. It acts on the assumption that humans and animals should be able to live together in meaningful, non-violent and ethically acceptable ways. The foundation acknowledges democratic rules and seeks open dialog. In order to reach its objectives, the foundation is prepared to cooperate as long as its independency, integrity and critical evaluation are warranted. The foundation is based on scientific research and operates goal-oriented.
