Help animals

The activities of SUST

All over the world, countless animals in overcrowded shelters live sadly or struggle for their survival in wild colonies. Day after day, even today, animals that have become inconvenient are still abandoned, deported or mistakenly kept for lack of better knowledge. The Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation contributes with effective means to the fact that animal suffering can be reduced or even prevented sustainably.

This animal welfare work is based on four pillars:

1. Competence Centre Animal Shelter: Animal shelters become high-quality transition stations for homeless animals, where animals are kept and promoted in a way that is appropriate for their species and finally transferred to good new places.

2. Neutering campaigns: Braking the animal misery

3. Education and training of specialists: Specialists are given the opportunity to optimise their knowledge and improve animal welfare.

4. Education of the population: love of animals with heart and mind

These four elements form the important basis for sustainable animal welfare projects.

Those animals that are not yet able to benefit from the effects of this reconstruction work and have been born into a world where they are not wanted need the emergency aid of SUST.

Total Neuterings: 51

The short-term organization of the free neutering campaign in Frumușani was a direct response to the needs of the community, as the villagers asked us.
The Frumușani campaign proved to be a resounding success in meeting the need. The campaign, which lasted a single day from morning to early evening, was characterized by its efficiency and organization, despite the fact that a small team was deployed. The efficient execution of the tasks enabled us to complete the day's work quickly.
The fact that all appointments could be made within three days testifies to the good reputation that our medical team enjoys in the village. It also reflects the deep trust that the community places in our local contact person - our friendly hostess Doina.
Rural areas often lack access to basic veterinary care, leading to untreated injury, illness and suffering for animals. Access to medical care ensures timely treatment and a higher standard of animal welfare. Education and access to veterinary care promotes responsible pet ownership, e.g. through vaccinations, regular check-ups and neutering. This reduces the number of unwanted animals and promotes a healthier animal population.

In the quiet village of Frumușani lives a resilient little cat named Cricket. She is a stray who roams the streets of the village with calm determination, despite facing challenges that many did not recognize. One fateful day, concerned villagers discovered Cricket struggling with a disturbing sight - a string wrapped tightly around her neck and stuck in her mouth. It was a harrowing sight, a cruel torture that had caused Cricket immense pain and suffering. The news spread quickly through the village, reaching the ears of compassionate souls who understood that immediate action had to be taken. It was at this point that Cricket crossed paths with Doina, and she quickly made sure that Cricket was rescued and treated at the upcoming campaign. The day of the campaign arrived, and Cricket was brought to us by the villagers who had found her. The veterinary team, equipped with expertise and compassion, immediately attended to Cricket's dire situation. With the utmost care and precision, they carefully removed the cord that had cut deep into her throat and mouth. Fortunately, it was a painless procedure as Cricket was under anesthesia for the spay. In the midst of the neuter campaign, Cricket's case was a poignant reminder of the importance of accessible veterinary care in rural areas. Her successful treatment not only alleviated her immediate suffering, but also underscores the importance of these campaigns in providing vital medical care to animals in need.

Some of the dogs were captured by Dr. Mircea Ștefanache, our esteemed SUST veterinarian, who is known for his expertise and compassionate approach. His remarkable skills go beyond traditional veterinary practices, as he demonstrates an exceptional ability to anaesthetize shy street dogs from a distance so that they can be safely captured and subsequently neutered. Dr. Ștefanache's dedication and innovative methods not only facilitated the capture of these shy animals, but also underline his tireless commitment to the welfare of all living creatures. Dr. Irina Corbu-Rudnic and Dr. Mircea Ștefanache were assisted in Frumușani by veterinary nurse Mihaela Vinogradof, young doctor Andrei Tudorache and veterinary student George Anghel. Together, they neutered and treated 51 animals.

We discovered a small white dog near a fishing spot. His once lively nature had been overshadowed by stress from a nasty flea and tick infestation. It was a pitiful sight, but in the matted fur and tired eyes lay a spirit longing for care and kindness. Doina, known for her compassionate heart and tireless commitment to animal welfare, who discovered the dog, saw an opportunity to give this little pup the care he so desperately needed. She immediately took care of the dog's ailments. With meticulous care, Doina rid him of the pesky fleas and ticks that had plagued him for far too long. She groomed him in advance, ensuring that his journey to recovery had begun. After being neutered by Dr. Irina and a liberating shave, the dog was placed in the care of a loving foster home where he found comfort and further medical care. Under the devoted care of the foster family, he is making remarkable progress.Once he has all his vaccinations, preparations will be made to give him a "forever home" - a place where he will be cherished and loved for the rest of his days. This story of resilience and compassion is a testament to the tireless efforts of people like Doina and the profound impact of campaigns like this free neutering campaign. Thanks to their tireless efforts, animals like this little white dog are given the chance to overcome adversity and find the warmth of a loving family that offers them hope and a better future.
