Help animals

The activities of SUST

All over the world, countless animals in overcrowded shelters live sadly or struggle for their survival in wild colonies. Day after day, even today, animals that have become inconvenient are still abandoned, deported or mistakenly kept for lack of better knowledge. The Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation contributes with effective means to the fact that animal suffering can be reduced or even prevented sustainably.

This animal welfare work is based on four pillars:

1. Competence Centre Animal Shelter: Animal shelters become high-quality transition stations for homeless animals, where animals are kept and promoted in a way that is appropriate for their species and finally transferred to good new places.

2. Neutering campaigns: Braking the animal misery

3. Education and training of specialists: Specialists are given the opportunity to optimise their knowledge and improve animal welfare.

4. Education of the population: love of animals with heart and mind

These four elements form the important basis for sustainable animal welfare projects.

Those animals that are not yet able to benefit from the effects of this reconstruction work and have been born into a world where they are not wanted need the emergency aid of SUST.

Trainee program for young veterinarians of SUST and Kompanima

A report by veterinarian med. vet. Gina Steiner, who is currently in an internship at the SUST Animal Orphan Hospital in Bucharest, Romania

"I am  here in Bucharest & closer environment for 3 weeks and experience daily the working everyday life of the SUST veterinarian Dr. Irina Corbu. Every day, cats and dogs are neutered and normal consultation hours are held. I can learn all important skills for the practical activity as a veterinarian in the animal protection employment here. Among other things, this includes: consolidating the current castration techniques, getting to know anaesthetics and medicines and how to comply with hygiene standards despite a lack of materials. The idea of the practical course is is it that one is usable in the future as veterinary surgeon in animal protection employments at home and abroad. I am very grateful to SUST and Kompanima for this offer".

Animal-friendly operation training for young veterinarians

Castrating feral cats and dogs at home and abroad is an extremely important animal welfare service. For many young veterinarians this seems to be the ideal opportunity to learn practically on animals. However, it is questionable if insufficiently trained beginners perform actions on animals in need which they do not yet really master.

Many young veterinary surgeons announce themselves for animal protection employments in the hope, to be able to work practically on the animal and to learn. It is however questionable, if insufficiently trained beginners make actions at distressed animals, which they did not learn yet sufficiently. A solid training before an animal protection employment is compelling also for veterinarians. In a common project the Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation and Kompanima form this basis for animal protection/castration at home and abroad.

In addition to a theoretical introduction day and practical exercises with partner veterinarians in Switzerland, the animal protection organisations also offer accompanied internships for selected applicants in the SUST animal orphan hospitals. In 2017, four young veterinarians are expected to benefit from this offer.
