Help animals

The activities of SUST

All over the world, countless animals in overcrowded shelters live sadly or struggle for their survival in wild colonies. Day after day, even today, animals that have become inconvenient are still abandoned, deported or mistakenly kept for lack of better knowledge. The Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation contributes with effective means to the fact that animal suffering can be reduced or even prevented sustainably.

This animal welfare work is based on four pillars:

1. Competence Centre Animal Shelter: Animal shelters become high-quality transition stations for homeless animals, where animals are kept and promoted in a way that is appropriate for their species and finally transferred to good new places.

2. Neutering campaigns: Braking the animal misery

3. Education and training of specialists: Specialists are given the opportunity to optimise their knowledge and improve animal welfare.

4. Education of the population: love of animals with heart and mind

These four elements form the important basis for sustainable animal welfare projects.

Those animals that are not yet able to benefit from the effects of this reconstruction work and have been born into a world where they are not wanted need the emergency aid of SUST.

Be careful when filling up antifreeze!!!

November 2022

A sad story that shows the tragic consequences of spilled antifreeze.
The story of 4 kittens who lived near a car repair shop in Bucharest, Romania.
One of the employees of the workshop found one kitten dead one day and therefore immediately took the other three to the SUST Orphan Animal Hospital Bucharest. One of them was then already in such a bad, critical condition that we unfortunately had to put it out of its misery immediately.
Everything pointed to antifreeze poisoning; they were lethargic, without appetite, hyperventilating, dehydrated, had dilated pupils and balance problems.
The remaining two we immediately provide intravenous fluids, vitamins and medications and place them in an incubator where one unfortunately died overnight.
The only surviving one, had a body temperature of only 33.4° the next morning, we warmed it, provided it with oxygen and treated it, but unfortunately this kitten also died the following night.
The sweet taste of ethylene glycol seems to be enormously attractive to cats (even to dogs and children). Cats need only ingest a small amount of the antifreeze to become seriously ill or even die. Ethylene glycol is broken down in the liver and these breakdown products severely damage the kidneys.
Therefore, always wipe up spilled antifreeze thoroughly immediately!
