Muzzle and leash obligation: When applies what?

In addition to many federal regulations, dog owners must also observe cantonal regulations. While the protection of animals from humans is regulated uniformly throughout the country by animal protection law, the protection of humans from animals is in fact a matter for the cantons.

The dog-related regulations can vary greatly from canton to canton. For example, there are different regulations on the leash and muzzle requirement. In the canton of Zug, for example, the owner of a bull terrier is generally allowed to walk it on a leash. In the canton of Zurich, he must take his dog on a leash (in the canton of Zurich bull terriers are classified as dangerous dogs) and put a muzzle on it. In the canton of Schwyz there is a leash obligation for all dogs on the entire public area.

Consequently, every dog owner is required to clarify before acquiring a dog whether the respective dog breed is permitted in the canton of residence and whether the cantonal regulations provide for a general leash requirement that is independent of the dog breed.
