Dogs - Q&A's

What is the process of importing dogs?

The import of dogs from abroad is regulated by the Ordinance on the Import, Transit and Export of Pet Animals (EDAV-Ht) and controlled by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV).

As a rule, applies:

  • A maximum of 5 animals can be imported on pet terms.
  • (The import of more than 5 animals falls under import for commercial purposes).
  • The import of dogs with docked ears and/or tails is generally prohibited.
  • The dog needs a correctly filled out official pet passport (from 12 -16 weeks)
  • The dog must be correctly marked with a microchip (from 12-16 weeks).
  • The dog needs a valid rabies vaccination, which must be recorded in the pet passport. The vaccination must have been given no earlier than 12 weeks of age and at least 21 days prior to importation. Kittens under 12 weeks of age may be imported without rabies vaccination. However, they require a certificate completed by the (new) owner stating that they have been kept without contact with wild animals since birth. The certification requirement does not apply if the young animals are accompanied by their mother, on whom they are still dependent. Canine puppies up to the age of 8 weeks may only be imported if they are accompanied by the mother animal.
  • When entering from rabies risk countries, more extensive requirements apply (blood test, longer waiting periods, import permit). It is therefore essential to inform yourself about this before entering Switzerland. If there is uncertainty whether a dog has been correctly vaccinated against rabies, the risk of forced euthanasia is often high!
  • After entering Switzerland with the dog, you should make an appointment with the veterinarian, who will check the papers and register the dog in the database Amicus.
