A case for the large animal rescue team

The Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare finances the campaign "Also farm animals deserve professional rescues" of the GTRD (Grosstier Rescue Service)

Here is another report by Ruedi Keller, head of the large animal rescue team:

"Last Thursday, the Schaffhausen police alerted us with the following message:
Two cows have fallen into a manure pit in Oberhallau and are fighting for their lives. The manure pit was at least 3 m deep and the fire brigade was able to secure the heads of the two animals improvised.
When we arrived, only the heads of the animals were still visible. They bravely held themselves in the cold, thick manure slop.
With the safety harness, both cows were safely rescued. One cow was quite undercooled after the rescue, but the veterinary team and the owners took great care of the animals, so that both could recover well".

The rescue of large animals such as horses and cows requires special equipment and a great deal of effort: In addition to professional and often expensive equipment, it requires dedicated and well-trained specialists with many years of experience, who are able to rescue large animals from life-threatening situations with a great deal of sensitivity and experience. The honorary specialists of the Grosstierrettungsdienstes GTRD often accept long journeys and do not shy away from costs or dirt to recover the frightened animals as gently as possible. Rescue missions of the large animal rescue service are often complex and involve high costs. While most horse emergencies are covered by insurance policies, the costs of rescuing so-called farm animals often present animal owners with financial problems - often the GTRD even remains at its expense. However, this does not prevent him from continuing to save the lives of farm animals on a daily basis, using all available resources. We believe that such commitment deserves support. For this reason, SUST has agreed to pay for the costs of rescuing "farm animals" such as cows. Because we think that even "farm animals" deserve professional rescue!
