Veterinarian Training in Budapest, Hungary

October 2017

With the leadership of the disciples of the world-famous surgeon, Jeffrey Young a „Dog and cat neutering workshop” has been organised by the Swiss Susy Utzinger Stiftung für Tierschutz, and the Rex kutyaotthon alapítvány on 15th of October, in Hungary.

The Hungarian training for vets was organized for the 6th time by the Swiss Susy Utzinger Foundation in collaboration with the local Rex Foundation. The organizers also received essential instruments and medicines from the Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) that contributed significantly to the success of the training.

The workshop provided a complex theoretic and technical overview of population control of dogs and cats. During the morning presentation Dr. Péter Kiraly spoke about the veterinary and animal welfare aspects of the overpopulation of dogs and cats, that is a world-wide problem. He highlighted that euthanasia cannot be a tool for population control, and the only efficient solution to handle this situation is neutering. The second speaker Dr. Balazs Bence introduced the latest surgical techniques with the help of slides and tutorial videos. The participating vets -who came from all over the Country- could actively join in the surgical practice, and could peer into the alternative methods like „early age” operations. The organizers are committed followers of pre-pubertal neutering, which technical knacks were shared with the participants in theory and in practice, too. During the surgical workshop in the afternoon the collegaues could make themselves certain of the fact, that the operations can be carried out even at the age of 4 weeks with complete safety. Moreover -after obtaining some routine- prepubertal neutering has several advantages through the significant reduction of surgery complications, costs, length of time, etc.

21 dogs and cats of different ages has been neutered during the professionally organized surgical workshop in the afternoon. The surgeries were conducted by 3 skilful surgeons paralelly at three operation tables.

According to the unanimous feedbacks of the participants, the workshop proved to be particularly useful.
