Autumn tips

Pets in autumn: Diligence can save lives!

Autumn is here and with it often unexpected dangers for pets. Suddenly the weather changes and thus everyday habits change. Simple winter preparations such as filling in antifreeze require certain knowledge from pet owners. The Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation informs up-to-date, where special care is necessary.

Drivers beware!

Low temperatures can tempt cats to seek shelter in engine compartments and wheel arches. Knocking on the hood before driving on warns sleeping velvet paws of the impending danger.

Just as life-threatening for curious house tigers is the intake of antifreeze: When the car is prepared for winter and antifreeze is spilled, many cats feel magically attracted to it - the highly toxic liquid seems to taste delicious to them. Therefore any puddles must always be removed!

Safety for dogs and owners

"In the twilight phases of autumn and winter the danger of bad traffic accidents with domestic animals is particularly large, says Susy Utzinger, managing director of the foundation and animal welfare expert. In the dark season, dog owners do well to make themselves and their four-legged friends visible to others: Specialist retailers offer a wide selection of light collars (also for cats, by the way), reflective leashes and flashing lights. Not only do they look pretty, they can be life-saving under certain circumstances.

But even the smallest pets must be taken care of: Guinea pigs, which can often provide themselves with vitamins independently in their outdoor enclosures during the warm season, are compulsorily dependent on a supply of vitamin C during the winter, either through vitamin C-rich green forage or through vitamin drops.

"With the individually suitable, simple precautions animal friends and their favorites come smoothly through the autumn", explains Utzinger. More over the work of the animal welfare foundation is to be reread on www.susyutzinger.ch
