Stop Fur - How to recognize real fur

October 2020

Many people do without real fur for the sake of the animals - and are often insecure about fur applications when buying new clothes. Real fur should be declared accordingly, investigations of animal protection organizations uncover however again and again that genuine fur trimming at many articles of clothing is not proven in accordance with regulations. Also a favorable price unfortunately does not speak for a long time any more for the fact that it concerns fake fur. On the contrary: Fake fur is often even more expensive than real animal fur.

How can real fur be distinguished from fake fur? Here are some tips:

1. Leather or fabric carpet pad?
Under real fur you will find leather! When you pull real fur apart, you will first come across the animal's undercoat (fine, fluffy animal hairs), underneath which you can see the leather. If it is fake fur, you will come across a fabric pad to which the artificial hairs are attached.
2. Do the fitting test!
If you slightly blow on real fur, the hairs move - they are more flexible than artificial fur. They also discover long outer hairs and fine, shorter undercoat in real fur. In fake fur, on the other hand, they will find hairs of equal thickness and length.
3. Apply the burning test!
With the burning test you can clearly determine what you are dealing with: Pluck out some hairs and burn them. If you now smell the typical smell of charred hair, it is real fur. But if it is fake fur, it smells synthetic and the hairs melt into a small, hard lump.
4. Avoid in doubt!
Since furs are also dyed or otherwise treated, it is often not 100 percent certain whether they are fake or real fur. In case of doubt it is better to avoid the suspicious piece!
