Slowing down the animal misery: SUST is tackling it sustainably

Hundreds of thousands of street dogs and cats fight for survival in many countries, countless of them are trapped and many of them vegetate in terrible conditions, while new unwanted offspring are constantly being born. The suffering of unwelcome dogs and cats is endless in many countries.
Neutering is the only way to reduce the overpopulation of street animals in a long-term and animal-friendly way. Thousands of dogs, cats and other animals have already been operated on by the Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation in various countries. This measure has prevented countless unwanted offspring from being born. Such actions have a future: no more emaciated mothers on the streets, no more famine and no more sexually transmitted diseases, in which the animals die miserably.

If the number of street animals is reduced, no more cruelty to animals will be tackled: no more poisoning, no more slaughtered animals, no more shooting. In this way the animal misery is slowed down, slowly but steadily and sustainably.

The area of the pillar "neutering campaigns" includes:

- Collaboration with veterinarians all over Switzerland for cat neutering campaigns
- takeover of the neutering costs of stocks from farms and feral groups
- Rental of cat and dog traps
- Brochure "Cat neutering = active animal protection
- informing the population about this topic by posters and leaflets
- Discussions with authorities and politicians
- Training and further training of specialized personnel for the execution of neutering campaigns
- Implementation of neutering weeks in various countries by SUST teams
- Financing of neutering campaigns in different countries

The activities of the Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation are financed exclusively by donations and legacies (no public support).

Donate for the spay/neuter campaigns of the Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation
These many operations are very effective, but cost a lot of money and therefore we need your help and support: Give hope and instead of the usual gifts, give one (or more) animal (s) the hope for a better life! A neutering gives an animal many advantages and does no longer contribute to the overpopulation of unwanted animals.

++Campaign report of our neutering action in Bordenii Mari, Romania from 28-30.03.2023++

247 free neuter surgeries

Total Neuter Surgeries during this action: 247!

Place: Bordenii Mari, Prahova district
Date: March 28 - 30, 2023

Bordenii Mari is a village located about 100 km north of the Romanian capital Bucharest. The last SUST neutering campaign took place there just over two years ago. In Prahova County, we support the association: "Arca lui Norocel", which was founded in 2018 by Iulia Zamfirescu, but has been active in the area for much longer. Indeed, Iulia inherited the passion for animals from her parents, who were also animal protectors. These years of experience, makes it easier for us to find the best campaign locations. Because of the good contacts and premises, Bordenii Mari became an important point on "our" Prahova map - and one of the places where we are urgently needed. Our team from SUST-OAH Bucharest was allowed to use the sports hall in Bordeni, after we had been stationed in Urleta, about 10 km away, last summer.

The campaign was a great success, thanks to targeted, well thought-out announcements and information in the surrounding communities. It was possible to immediately perceive the meaningful effect of our help. Our presence immediately improved the quality of life of the animals.  The neutering action also meant that many of them were finally let off the chain, and the risk of abandonment and infection with diseases through reproduction is immediately reduced with neutering. Our offer of free help spread quickly among the population and brought much needed hope and new knowledge.

For people and animals who were brought over by their families, caretakers and "caretakers". From the little dog who came to us together with his best cat friends, to the newly mother dog with bad tumors, who was separated from her babies for a short time by concerned neighbors, so that she can take care of them properly again afterwards and they don't have to die in agony.  For all the animals far away from human proximity, who have no one to turn to, we are deeply grateful that we could help thanks to such big-hearted, enlightened people and their kind support.

SUST-Vet Dr. Irina Corbu-Rudnic concludes this report with the words: "We attach great importance to continuing to promote the values of the SUST, which are of central importance to us. For example, we have even been able to educate many caregivers and keepers in the region on how to deal with skin diseases that can also be transmitted to humans. For example, the owner of a male cat who had such a severe infestation of scabies mites that pus was pouring out of his ears, but who slept with his human every night. The latter was not even aware of the danger.
By continuing to work intensively with local volunteers to educate people about responsible pet ownership, we can literally watch the quality of life for humans and animals improve. We hope this will continue in the coming months and result in significantly fewer animals being abandoned or chased away due to constant breeding. We are very proud to be #teamSUST!"
