"We were summoned by the police of Schaffhausen and the Stetten fire brigade to rescue a calf from a manure pit.
The hole was very tight, measuring only 60cm in diameter, and at the bottom the calf had got stuck in the thick dung. We managed to put the large animal vertical recovery set (GTVBS) on the calf and then lifted it out of it's awkward position with the telescopic loader. We were then able to put it back on safe ground in the outlet, unharmed, where we cleaned it with the fire hose."
Rescuing large animals such as horses and cows requires special equipment and great effort: In addition to professional and often expensive equipment, committed specialists with many years of training are needed to rescue large animals from life-threatening situations with great caution and experience. The honorary specialists of the large animal rescue service GTRD often put up with long distances and aren't afraid of neither costs nor dirt to rescue the frightened animals as gently as possible.
Rescue operations of the large animal rescue service are often time-consuming and usually involve high costs. While most horse emergencies are covered by insurance, the costs of rescuing livestock pose financial problems to animal owners - often the GTRD doesn't even get remuneration. However, this does not prevent them from continuing to save the lives of livestock on a daily basis while using all available resources.
We believe that such a commitment deserves support. That is why SUST has agreed to pay for the costs of rescuing "livestock" such as cows. Because we believe: "Livestock" also deserves professional rescuing!
