When the nights are not too cold anymore, the spawning migration begins
Many frogs, toads and pigs have hibernated on land, then they are released from hibernation and in spring thousands of them make their way to their spawning waters. Especially on rainy nights, tens of thousands of migratory animals are on the Swiss roads - many of them are overrun by cars on this route.
One way to prevent these animals from dying on the road is to install amphibian fences along the affected streets, but this also requires a great deal of volunteer helpers who check the fences several times a day (until late at night) and bring the animals across the road regularly.
Also in 2016, a team of SUST volunteers covered a large part of the morning and night services at the amphibian fence on the Kyburg golf course in Winterthur.
